Early in our Ember development we came to a crossroad that had significant impact on the Model structure in our application. In this post I’ll summarize one of many issues we ran into during those first several months, and solicit feedback in search of a "best practice" for the Adapter/Serializer structure in the following scenario.

I’ve used a lot of different jQuery plugins without giving them much of a second thought after implementation. With slick carousel though, each time I come back and use it I’m a little more impressed each time. All the features I need are built right in, are intuitive, and work consistently.

Yehuda Katz has announced the new major release of Ember.JS. Unlike typical major releases, they are using this major release as an opportunity to remove features (see Release Notes) that have been deprecated as of Ember 1.13. We appreciate the Ember team's mindful philosophy toward releases (and providing long-term support in a sensible manner). It definitely helps teams like us out.

We’ve been working on a project recently in which our designs called for a hover dropdown menu that did not close until the user clicks outside of the drop-down. Creating something like this in jQuery and in a Ruby on Rails app would have been a no-brainer. But I quickly discovered it wasn’t going to be quite so straightforward in our new Ember app.

It's no mystery that client side JS frameworks are here to stay, and while they do offer many benefits. The drawbacks can be daunting, especially if you have an application with any traction already.

I’ve been scouring the internet to find some folks in our fair city of Portland, OR who are willing to talk about their developer experience.
I was lucky enough to connect with Ken Stowell of Metal Toad Media. Metal Toad Media has an agency here in Portland as well as L.A. and San Francisco.
Ken lives here with us in Portland and was happy to answer my questions. I was hoping to learn a little more about Javascript developers and how developer interns like me could find our way into the industry.

Here is a little knowledge nugget that Jack and I picked up during our time at An Event Apart: Seattle (more on that to come). We learned about this handy little site called caniuse.com that was created by Alexis Deveria. The site lets you look up HTML5, CSS, JS API, SVG, etc. elements to see what their support is across browsers. Then you can assess.. Can I use that?
We are freshly back from the conference and I have already started using and benefiting from it. Give it a look and find out what you can use. (Turns out you can use the first-child pseudo-element in IE8!)

Every year, Planet Argon releases a retrospective compiling the past year’s events; this includes business accomplishments like app launches, and personal milestones like marriage and travels. A couple months ago, I, Jack Bouba, was tasked with getting the ball rolling for the 2012 Year in Review. I felt this was right up my alley because (1) I love being in charge and (2) I’ve been rolling balls since childhood.

Your website, just like your car, is often due for a bit of maintenance. Fortunately, tuning up your website is less intimidating than that familiar experience of standing next to your vehicle, nodding your head dumbly while handing your mechanic (who, by the way, is much more ruggedly handsome than you) a wad of cash. And that is even less daunting than attempting to work on the car yourself- you’ve tried that before, and you still have nightmares and stained pants.
