Leupold & Stevens has been designing, machining, and assembling precision optical instruments for a century. They recently expanded their hunting lineup with the addition of an RCX Trail Camera System to track animals for hunting.
The RCX Trail System comes with a remote camera that you can place anywhere and a controller/viewer that allows you to see what that remote camera sees. This system allows the user to find targets they wouldn’t normally be able to see from their position.
Leupold came to us to make a microsite for the launch of the RCX Trail Camera System. Leupold is a local company, and it’s always a pleasure collaborating with clients in person for a project. We went with a sales sheet model for how to present the product on the website. We felt Leupold’s potential RCX customers would want a simple explanation of the products, large photos to view, and full technical specifications for evaluating their purchase.
RCX Trail Camera System
We wanted the RCX microsite to share the design and structure of Leupold’s homepage and their Redfield site. Redfield Gun Sight company was founded in 1909 and was bought by Leupold in 2008, and the Redfield website features a simple design with social elements in the footer. We tried to stick to the Redfield layout but used rugged textures with dark brown nature colors and a bold header font to fit Leupold’s branding.
The site’s front page introduces the products in short blocks of information with large photos. From there, users can follow links to a tutorials page, a support page with frequent questions, and a contact page. Links that take the user away from the microsite use an arrow icon.

Playing a video on the RCX microsite
The front page shows clear photographs of the products. We included videos to demonstrate them in use. Rather than using feature bullets to generically list highlights, we hoped to have more exciting body copy that weaves different bits of information together.
Tutorials
Another requirement of the microsite was to publish their initial set of tutorials online. We created lightboxes with navigation to showcase the tutorials and instruction manuals. We felt this was the best way to display many pages of text without taking the user too far away from the product page.
Comparing RCX-1 and RCX-2
On the product details pages, Leupold had a great idea to showcase the specs of the two products into a comparison matrix so customers can compare the products directly on one page. Now both product pages show a simple chart at the top that allows potential customers to make easy decisions on which product fits them best.
Support
Frequently Asked Questions are displayed in an expandable listing which allows users to scan the questions.
Community features
One of the key features of the Redfield site that we wanted to implement on the RCX microsite was the community box in the footer. While the primary purpose of the microsite is to sell the RCX product, it’s also a great opportunity to introduce the Leupold brand and community to new customers.
We’re proud of what we have done for the RCX microsite, and we hope we can contribute to Leupold’s success with it.
